Aladdin Dot Com

We'rereharsing for our new pantomime "Aladdin dot com", which runs from 23-25 February in Telwall Parish Hall - see our website www.bwplayers.co.uk for more details.

It's a traditional pantomime story of Aladdin but with a modern twist - the plot is littered (a good word) with computer jokes, and your audience is challenged at the start to cheer, jeer and boo whenever they hear one.

Evil Cabanazar and his "mini-me" lookalike are after the magic lamp and dupe Aladdin to get it for them. But Aladdin won't give it up without a fight. His eyes are set on the beautiful Princess Jasmine - definitely not her overweight ugly sister Princess Wontun. Aladdin is helped in his quest by Wishee and the Widow Twankee, despite the efforts of the palace guards Sweet and Sour.

The Accrington Pals tells the story of a group of men from Accrington in northeast Lancashire going off to fight (and ultimately to die) with the Accrington Pals’ Battalion at the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. The play tells not only the story of the men at war, but also that of the women and families left behind trying to make the best of their circumstances.

The director, Maria Kwater, loves this play as it shows the full range of human emotions, from romance through to tragedy. In addition to the drama of the play, Maria is a Lancastrian herself, and her mother came from Accrington. When commenting on the play, she said “The fictitious characters and the romantic backdrop of the play should not overlook the fact that the story of the Accrington Pals (like many other Pals’ battalions nationwide) was true. Out of 720 men from The Accrington Pals at the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 584 were killed, wounded or missing. The ultimate tragedy of all Pals battalions was that, as the men were so closely knit (albeit that they formed effective fighting units), this meant that when they suffered major casualties, the whole community was shattered.”

Come along and be drawn into a world that is funny, moving and tragic in turn.
