Hi everyone!

My name is David and I've been recently appointed the publicity officer for Leeds Arts Centre. LAC, as we are more familiarly known, has been going in Leeds since 1945, so there is a lot of history to the group! We are one of a number of groups based at the Carriageworks in Leeds city centre, collectively known as the Leeds Civic Arts Guild.

LAC usually perform 4 shows a season, starting in the Autumn each year, around October/November time, with other shows in January/February, April/May and June/July. Dates move year on year depending on who else is booked in the theatre but it's around those dates! We also have Green Room events, such as play readings and workshops for new directors, performance techniques and other events like rehearsed readings and improvisation.

New members are always welcome, and you don’t need any experience to join. As well as acting you could become involved with directing, production management, stage management, set and costume design and construction, supervising properties or costumes, prompting, sound recording and operation, lighting design, front of house management and publicity. There is something for everybody! Our members range in age from 16 to 80+ and we have a strong core of both younger and older members, who come from all walks of life and from a wide range of backgrounds.

You do not have to audition to join, but you may be asked to audition to be in a play. If you want to act but are not ready for the main stage yet, you can participate in a Green Room production. All new directors are required to direct a Green Room production before directing a full-length play on the main stage.

The Leeds Arts Centre is run by a committee of members which is elected every year. We are a registered charity and are funded by the money we make from ticket sales and subscriptions, plus other fund-raising activities. Memberships are discounted for the unwaged and you get as much out of the society as you put in to it! Rehearsals for productions take place in the Carriageworks. They usually start at 7.30 p.m. and last for a couple of hours or so. Most productions have a rehearsal period of about six weeks, with rehearsals taking place on three or four nights a week.

Our website is http://www.leedsartscentre.org.uk which has details of how to join, an archive of our productions 1940s, a selection of photographs, set designs and more information, as well as links to Twitter and Facebook. Being in the heart of Leeds City Centre we are competing with theatres such as the Grand, Civic Theatre and the West Yorkshire Playhouse so if you can come down and see our shows, you will be more than welcome!

Thanks Simon! Am trying to spread the word about Amdram.net amongst our other groups in the Guild so hopefully there'll be some more new groups appearing soon.
