I found the rules around copyright very confusing initially while searching for scripts for amateur theatre. The rules have just recently changed down-under and I was determined to find a royalty free script for an outdoor perfromance.
There are a few budget 'classic' titles available from commercial agents at reasonable prices. I found the 'classic' offerings a bit unappealing. From the elizabethans all the way to O'Neill were easy to access, but I found myself wanting something low-brow and funny, rather than classic. My fellow amateurs urged me to dig deeper and avoid vintage works as 'too old'.
The Australian Copyright Council does not keep a register of titles whose copyright has expired, but made the rules more clear. Basically no further copyright will expire on plays in australia until 2025 and all the existing expired copyrights are pre 1st Jan 1955. So like a vulture I set out to find a list of scripts by the date of the authors death. I couldn't find one, so I made this list myself.
It is not comprehensive and players must complete their own research in order to be certain my findings are correct. All care but no responsibility is taken.
