A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR ADEL PLAYERS

It is Yorkshire in 1885. Where two generations ago heather bloomed on the fell, there now stand the 17 soot-covered cones of a huge glassworks, its furnaces belching fumes and smoke over the homes of the workers in the valley below.

But profits have melted away through foreign competition; debts to the bank have built up; and John Rutherford's children do not want their lives sacrificed to the firm of Rutherford & Son the way their father's and grandfather's lives have been.

In their adjoining grand house, the tensions build. Who will survive when battle commences? The family? Or the company?

Hailed when first performed in 1912 as a drama rivalling the plays of Ibsen, 'Rutherford & Son' by Githa Sowerby is based partly on the history of the glassworks that belonged to her grandfather.

This Adel Players production is directed by Pat Riley who, with Arts Council funding in 2009, wrote 'Looking for Githa' - the first and still the only biography of the playwright of 'Rutherford & Son'.

Performances are from Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 October 2014, at Adel Memorial Hall, Church Lane, Adel, Leeds, LS16 8DE, and begin at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £8 and can be reserved by e-mailing tickets@adel-players.org.uk or by phoning 0113 275 5585.
