Plays, Concerts, Music Festivals Rehearsals are in progress for the second play of the season,"The Rise and Fall of Little Voice" by Jim Cartwright which is scheduled to play from 26th-30th April. The club was formed in 1935 and has had a fairly uninterrupted run in producing 5/6 plays each year except for one year during the second world war. However, it is not possible to rest on the proverbial laurels because of the current climate in the world of theatre. A nucleus of club members work tirelessly in keeping things buoyant and fund raising is at an all time high in order to fund refurbishment of the very old building. Last year saw the start of a new 'Forging Links' meeting with other likeminded organisations in the area, the object being, by working together and sharing ideas we can learn how to keep theatre live in these difficult times. The Society has gone from strength to strength in the past thirty-four years and now performs two or three shows each season. We have a strong membership spread over three sections: Minis, Juniors and Adults. The Adults are just as busy, performing three main productions in each two year period. Children between 5 and 14 years of age may be eligible to join as a Junior Member, in one of our two children&;rsquo;s sections: Minis (school years Reception-5) and Juniors (school years 6-9). We hold open auditions for the children&;rsquo;s sections once a year, usually in July. Each child is required to sing, read and dance. Each child who performs on stage with us is subject to &;ldquo;Children In Performance&;rdquo; regulations. If you&;rsquo;re not the &;ldquo;Thespian&;rdquo; type, you may wish to help out behind the scenes - we would be very grateful of your time and energy. The Leeds Arts Centre is an amateur drama group which was formed in 1945. We produce four/five plays a year - usually in February, March/April, May/June and October and are members of the Leeds Civic Arts Guild which is a group of amateur theatre, musical, fine arts and opera companies based at the Carriageworks on Millennium Square in Leeds city centre. Our members range in age from 16 to 80+ and we have a strong core of both younger and older members, who come from all walks of life and from a wide range of backgrounds. New members are always welcome, and you don&;rsquo;t need any experience to join. As well as acting you could become involved with directing, production management, stage management, set and costume design and construction, supervising properties or costumes, prompting, sound recording and operation, lighting design, front of house management and publicity. You do not have to audition to join, but you may be asked to audition to be in a play. If you want to act but are not ready for the main stage yet, you can participate in a Green Room production. All new directors are required to direct a Green Room production before directing a full-length play on the main stage. Rehearsals for productions take place in the Carriageworks. They usually start at 7.30 p.m. and last for a couple of hours or so. Most productions have a rehearsal period of about six weeks, with rehearsals taking place on three or four nights a week. The Leeds Arts Centre is run by a committee of members which is elected every year. We are a registered charity and are funded by the money we make from ticket sales and subscriptions, plus other fund-raising activities.
