The reasons are many and varied, but the most common reason is that they simply did not realise the time and effort required to be in an amdram production. They simply assumed they would need to arrive, at their own convenience approximately once a week, and that they wouldn't need to get their hands dirty with setbuilding, manning the bar or cleaning up after the show.
I am always in favour of giving the new guy a chance and certainly don't hold with those societies that won't cast anyone new on stage, but I think the time and committment needed has to be made clear from the start - give them a timetable with all the rehearsals on it at the very beginning! Have a rehearsal policy - for example, if they have missed a certain number of rehearsals and are way behind the other cast members, that they would need to attend make up rehearsals to catch up. It sounds a bit over the top, but in most cases, isn't needed as they realise from the beginning the level of committment needed.
